Keel beach is the perfect safe place to learn to surf. A gently sloping beach that is exposed to swells travelling from the south and west means that we have waves of some sort almost all year around. There are no hazards under the water and prevailing south westerly winds tend to push novices back to shore rather than bringing them seaward. In summer time ,a defined surfing area is watched over by Mayo Co. Council beach lifeguards. Barring the sea being completely calm, then the only time that we can't run lessons on Keel is when the swell is too big, or if its too windy.

The Achill Dive Centre offers PADI* recognized courses in scuba diving for beginners right through to experienced divers, and we arrange trips to the best dive sites around the island. Our experienced and highly qualified instructors will help you discover the wonders of temperate water diving in this unspoilt environment. *PADI - Professional Association of Dive Instructors; diving courses which are recognized the world over. A range of courses are on offer from absolute beginners right through to experienced divers. Please enquire about the course suited to your needs, or read more about the different levels of diver training. If all you'd like to do is try diving for a day, we have the perfect course for you: Discover Scuba. The centre arranges dive trips to many of the locations around the Island, many of which are accessible only by boat (well worth it though!). We have a twin-engine dinghy which takes our divers right to the best dive spots, and the ride is an adventure in itself.

When you are staying on Achill Island, why not add another island onto your journey and go and visit stunning Clare Island at the mouth of Clew Bay.The dramatic lighthouse and cliffs,Grace O'Malleys castle, the Abbey, fantastic views into Clew Bay are all ahead of you if you care to make that journey.

The Clare Island Ferry Company is owned and operated by Brian & Alan O’Grady, natives of Clare Island whose family have been operating the Clare Island Ferry service since 1880. Alan & Brian operate the largest and most modern ferries to Clare Island, fully certified by Failte Ireland and the Department of the Marine.

Alan & Brian operate a scheduled service to Achill (Cloughmore) every Wednesday to collect the doctor. Visitors can travel on this trip by booking. They also provide a charter service to Achill Island on demand.
