Nobel Prize Winner Heinrich Böll (1917-1985) and his family visited Ireland first in 1954 and purchased a cottage on Achill Island. His cottage there is now used as a guest house for international and Irish artists.
He recorded some of his experiences in Ireland in his humorous book "Irisches Tagebuch" (Irish Journal). Böll grew up Catholic in the town of Cologne. Böll was at times controversial, the author of both bestselling works and a socially-engaged commentator on the state of the German people.
The Nobel Prize in Literature 1972 was awarded to Heinrich Böll "for his writing which through its combination of a broad perspective on his time and a sensitive skill in characterization has contributed to a renewal of German literature".
The Heinrich Böll cottage residency is open to all artists, writers and musicians. The cottage is usually made availabe for two week stays. The accomodation consists of three bedrooms a kitchen livingroom a writing room and a studio space. The cottage is situated at the edge of Dugort village and within walking distance of a shop. The cottage has a telephone but no internet.

Gagnant d’un Prix Nobel, Heinrich Böll (1917-1985) et sa famille visite l’Irlande en 1954 et s’établissent dans une petite maison sur ‘’Achill Island’’. Cette même maison est aujourd’hui utilisée comme résidence pour les artistes irlandais et internationaux.
Heinrich Böll rédigea quelques-unes de ses expériences en Irlande dans son livre humoristique « Irishes Tagebuch » (Journal irlandais). Böll grandit dans la ville de Cologne au sein de la religion catholique. Il fût contesté à certaines reprises, étant l’auteur de deux ouvrages « bestsellers » et un acteur socialement engagé sur les conditions du peuple Allemand.
En 1972, il remporte le Prix Nobel en Littérature pour ses écrits portant sur « la combinaison de sa large perspective du moment en plus de sa sensible habileté à décrire ce qui amena la reprise de la littérature Allemande. »
La maison Heinrich Böll est ouverte pour tous les artistes, écrivains et musiciens. Habituellement, la maison offre un accueil de deux semaines aux invités. L’hébergement consiste en trois chambres, une cuisine, un salon, une chambre d’écriture et un espace studio. Le « cottage » est situé en bordure du village de « Dugort » et à une distance de marche des divers services. Un téléphone vous est accessible, mais il n’y a pas d’accès internet.
